![]() Dear Advisors, The purpose of this monthly email is to alert Faculty and Kiwanis Advisors of timely information that will help you carry out your Advisor responsibilities. It also is intended to educate Kiwanis Club leaders about their club’s responsibilities to their Key Club(s). In this issue: ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN THIS MONTH . . .72nd Annual Florida District Convention – Huge Success Over 180 clubs represented and 1900 attendees present, last month’s District Convention may have been the largest ever. Complete coverage will be included in the next online issue of Sunshine Source. A big thank you to all those who chaperoned and assisted in many other ways. 67th Annual Key Club International Convention – July 7-11 (Florida District Tour July 5-13) Memphis, Tennessee will be the site of ICON 2010. The Florida Tour to ICON will be a blast and includes bus transportation, all meals, all hotel accommodations, ICON registration, giveaways, and overnight stops on the way up and back in Atlanta with visits to Six Flags parks. Discounted registration deadline was May 13, full registration fee (adds $35) deadline is June 15, but Florida Tour slots may not be available much beyond May 21. For more information, flyer, and form go to http://www.floridakeyclub.org/icon. 2010-2011 OIS Forms Should Now Be Completed Okay, let me put this in economic terms. Key Clubbers pay annual dues that fund services provided to their clubs. If the clubs do not complete the online Officer Information Sheet (OIS), then the District Board cannot communicate with officers and advisors and your club does not get what it has paid for. So, have your club secretary log onto http://opr.floridakeyclub.com/opr/opr_login.asp, and complete the OIS form, NOW. Once school is out, this will become a very big problem. If you have not followed our club’s bylaws and have not elected your club officers, please have the form completed with at least the Kiwanis and Faculty Advisors’ information. Don’t forget to include both Faculty and Kiwanis Advisor information. NOTE that since April 15th, clubs must register again for the coming year at this link with a new password before they can complete the OIS form or their Pride Reports. This is done for security reasons. If you are having problem with any of our website applications, contact the District Webmaster, Brian Lavoie, at Webmaster@FloridaKeyClub.com. Train Key Club Officers New officers need to be trained. There are several ways to accomplish this: Attendance at District Convention (DCON) that just occurred and at the appropriate officer workshops; former officers train new ones; attend the Key Club Lt. Governor’s (LTG’s) Divisional Council Meeting (DCM); or Kiwanis Club members and/or Faculty Advisor provides the training. There are materials on both the Florida District http://www.floridakeyclub.org/ and the Key Club International (KCI) http://www.keyclub.org websites that will help with planning and carrying out club officer training. In addition, your Key Club LTG or Assistant Administrator can assist you. Summer Board Meetings Successful Key Clubs have Board of Directors who meet over the summer to plan for the coming year. At a minimum they plan their membership drive, membership requirements, projects and schedule, and budget. Clubs that wait until they return to school to do this find it difficult to get started until later in the fall, don’t have projects ready to go to keep new members interested, and often have difficulty getting activities placed on the school calendar. Your club should be ready to rock and roll at its first meeting in August. It doesn’t hurt to plan a few service projects over the summer as well. Service doesn’t take a vacation. Pride Report Deadline There may have been some confusion about Pride Report deadlines, so here is the correct information. Pride Reports are to be completed AND SUBMITTED between the 1st and 10th of the month following the month being reported. They are past due after the 10th of the month. Club Secretaries should plan to complete and submit their reports as early as possible, not wait until the 10th to start and complete them (Pride Reports are not a test for which to cram the night before they are past due). In fact, a report can be filled out at anytime on an ongoing basis, then at the end of the month, after the last information is completed, it can be submitted. A submitted report can even be updated later. DON’T FORGET TO CLICK ON SUBMIT after inputting all information AND ready to send it on. Otherwise, the report has not been completed. Like the OIS form, the link to the Pride Reports is http://opr.floridakeyclub.com/opr/opr_login.asp. News to NoteChange in FCAT Dates Forces Florida Key Club to Change DCON Dates Please appreciate that I have just chewed my tongue off to avoid editorializing about our state legislature. Bottom line: Because of the Florida Legislator’s decision to move FCAT to mid April for the foreseeable future, Florida Key Club has been forced to move all DCON’s starting in 2011 through 2016 to May. Before you start writing me about how this change in dates is a bad idea, please read the information at The Effect of FCAT on District Convention so you will understand all the issues. It is not that long. On a much happier note . . . The Florida District Makes History, Again Key Club in Florida has played an important role in the history of Key Club since the beginning. Florida was instrumental in forming Key Club as an International organization, it was first district, held the first district convention, had the first Key Club International President, etc. Now we have added our name to the Key Club history books again. With the chartering on May 3 of a new club at Edison Collegiate High School in Punta Gorda, Florida has provided Key Club International with it 250,000th member. This is the first time that milestone has been reached. But that’s not all…on Wednesday, May 19th, dignitaries will descend upon the school to participate in the celebration. I am sure it will all be digitalized and available for future viewing, so keep a watch out. Again, I thank all of you for what you do to make Key Clubbing the great program that it is!
