What is the Major Emphasis Program?

The Major Emphasis Program  was created in 1946, at key club’s first international convention because they were challenged to find a way to unite all key clubs.  The whole purpose was to bring together all the key clubs and their members to focus energies on making an international impact .

The Major Emphasis Program  aims to help “Children: Their Future, Our Focus.”  The Program has three service partners which include the March of Dimes, Children’s Miracle Network and UNICEF.

March for Dimes Pencil

The March of Dimes was originally called the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis when US President Franklin D. Roosevelt founded it in 1938. The main goal was to prevent polio. The foundation got its name, the March of Dimes, when it asked the public to send in dimes to President Roosevelt at the White House for a fund-raiser. Over $1 million was raised within 12 years to help researchers identify all three polioviruses. In 1955, after having 1.8 million children participate in field trials for the polio vaccine, it was declared effective. Since 1970 over $1.8 billion has been raised to benefit all babies, and the event March of Babies takes place in more than 900 communities. The money raised helps fight premature birth and birth defects. 77% of every dollar supports research and programs to help moms have full-term pregnancies, babies who are born too soon, and babies begin healthy lives.

If you are interested in getting more involved participate in a local march or look into the March of Dimes Youth Program. The March of Babies is the March of Dimes largest fundraiser and usually takes place in April. Go to marchofdimes.com to find your local chapter to participate in a march. The March of Dimes Youth Program has more information on getting involved and creative ways on education people on the issue at hand.

UNICEF Pencil

In 2007, an estimated 9.2 million children worldwide under the age of five died from largely preventable causes. Some are directly caused by illnesses such as pneumonia, diarrhea and malaria. Others are caused by indirect causes including conflict and HIV/AIDS. Malnutrition, poor hygiene and lack of access to safe water and adequate sanitation contribute to more than half of these deaths. Two thirds of both neonatal and young child deaths — over 6 million deaths every year — are preventable. Half a million women die in pregnancy each year, most during delivery or in the first few days thereafter. UNICEF works with governments, national and international agencies, and civil society to support effective and essential actions at each phase of the life cycle of the child, including in pregnancy, early childhood, preschool and school-going years, and in adolescence. UNICEF helps give a quality basic education to better equip girls and boys with the knowledge and skills necessary to adopt healthy lifestyles, protect themselves from HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, and take an active role in social, economic and political decision-making as the transition to adolescence and adulthood. UNICEF works tirelessly to ensure that every child – regardless of gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic background or circumstances – has access to a quality education.

UNICEF seeks to make a difference in the lives of children affected by HIV and AIDS in four priority areas known as the ‘Four Ps’: (1) preventing mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV; (2)providing pediatric treatment; (3)preventing infection among adolescents and young people; and (4) protecting and supporting children affected by AIDS. UNICEF activities also encompass others areas, such as providing support to children affected by AIDS in emergency settings, which force people to flee their homes, interrupt education, break down communication systems, destroy health care facilities, divert political attention from HIV and AIDS and often precipitate an increase in sexual violence. Other contributions include collective work on behalf of children in the areas of communication, resource mobilization, and advocacy, partnership-building and supply management. All the money that Key Club helps raise for UNICEF is currently going to aide the children of Uruguay.
