ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN THIS MONTH . . .

67th Annual Key Club International Convention – July 7-11 (Florida District Tour July 5-13)

Registration for the district tour to Memphis, Tennessee, the site of ICON 2010, is now closed. We have about 60 students and chaperones attending.

2010-2011 OIS Form Should Have Been Completed – If Not, Advisor Needs to Do It

Advisors, we need your help! Although a majority of clubs have filled out their online Officer Information Sheets (OIS), not all have. If I cannot entice you to be sure that this VERY important task gets completed by appealing to you with the fact that this is our only source of information on you and your clubs’ leaders and that your members will not get all that your dues pay for if we cannot provide services to you, maybe this might work. At the end of next school year, your Lt. Governor will apply for an award call the Robert F. Lucas Outstanding Lt. Governor Award. Every LTG who earns the minimum points receives this award at next year’s International Convention. It is quite an honor for the student and for the Florida District. Maximum points are earned in one particular category by whether that LTG’s clubs complete this form by June 15. Please help this hard working LTG by making sure your club carries out its responsibilities. Attached is a list of clubs that have not completed the form. If your club is on it, please have it completed by June 15. It does not take long. If you have not elected new officers (like your bylaws required), still go into the form for the new year and complete what you do know (like the Faculty and Kiwanis Advisor information). That would be better than leaving the 2010-2011 form blank until next year. PLEASE!!!! The link to the form is: http://opr.floridakeyclub.com/opr/opr_login.asp

New Advisors for the New Year

If your position as Faculty Advisor or Kiwanis Advisor is changing for the new school year or Kiwanis administrator year, please be sure to update me and the OIS form as soon as your replacement is known.

Attend Kiwanis Meetings During Summer

It can be difficult for Key Club members to attend their sponsoring Kiwanis Club’s meetings during the school year. The summer recess may provide a better opportunity. Different members may rotate this among them so that as many as possible get a chance. Please encourage your members to contact their Kiwanis Club (Kiwanis Advisor or Kiwanis Club president) and make arrangements to attend meetings. Faculty Advisors who are not Kiwanians, don’t forget to attend yourself. You are always welcome at Kiwanis meetings!

May and Summer Pride Reports

Remember that the new Key Club year began with the April Pride Report due DO LATER than May 10th. The May Pride Report is due NO LATER than June 10th. For the Summer, one combined report is due NO LATER than September 10th for the months of June, July, and August. Like the OIS form, the link to the Pride Reports is http://opr.floridakeyclub.com/opr/opr_login.asp. The completion of Pride Reports is the responsibility of the Key Club Secretary or his/her designate.

News to Note

Thank You, Advisors

As the school year draws to a close (or has already closed for many of you), the Florida Key Club Committee and all of the Kiwanis Clubs in Florida thank you for your time and effort this past year as Advisors to our Key Clubs. We know that the effectiveness of Key Club as a Service and Leadership development organization is very much dependent on dedicated Advisors. We also know that to be an Advisor requires you to go above and beyond your normally compensated responsibilities and that your rewards are certainly not financial. I have personally met dozens of former Key Club members in various walks of life (including myself). I can assure you that like a teacher’s future impact on a young person is most often unknown, but is understood to be enormous, so is the impact of Key Club on the lives of its members and on the communities they serve later in life. Thank you for playing a significant role in improving our world one child and one community at a time!

Have a blessed and restful summer.

The Florida District Makes History, Again

ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN THIS MONTH . . .

72nd Annual Florida District Convention – Huge Success

Over 180 clubs represented and 1900 attendees present, last month’s District Convention may have been the largest ever. Complete coverage will be included in the next online issue of Sunshine Source. A big thank you to all those who chaperoned and assisted in many other ways.

67th Annual Key Club International Convention – July 7-11 (Florida District Tour July 5-13)

Memphis, Tennessee will be the site of ICON 2010. The Florida Tour to ICON will be a blast and includes bus transportation, all meals, all hotel accommodations, ICON registration, giveaways, and overnight stops on the way up and back in Atlanta with visits to Six Flags parks. Discounted registration deadline was May 13, full registration fee (adds $35) deadline is June 15, but Florida Tour slots may not be available much beyond May 21. For more information, flyer, and form go to http://www.floridakeyclub.org/icon.

2010-2011 OIS Forms Should Now Be Completed

Okay, let me put this in economic terms. Key Clubbers pay annual dues that fund services provided to their clubs. If the clubs do not complete the online Officer Information Sheet (OIS), then the District Board cannot communicate with officers and advisors and your club does not get what it has paid for. So, have your club secretary log onto http://opr.floridakeyclub.com/opr/opr_login.asp, and complete the OIS form, NOW. Once school is out, this will become a very big problem. If you have not followed our club’s bylaws and have not elected your club officers, please have the form completed with at least the Kiwanis and Faculty Advisors’ information. Don’t forget to include both Faculty and Kiwanis Advisor information. NOTE that since April 15th, clubs must register again for the coming year at this link with a new password before they can complete the OIS form or their Pride Reports. This is done for security reasons. If you are having problem with any of our website applications, contact the District Webmaster, Brian Lavoie, at Webmaster@FloridaKeyClub.com.

Train Key Club Officers

New officers need to be trained. There are several ways to accomplish this: Attendance at District Convention (DCON) that just occurred and at the appropriate officer workshops; former officers train new ones; attend the Key Club Lt. Governor’s (LTG’s) Divisional Council Meeting (DCM); or Kiwanis Club members and/or Faculty Advisor provides the training. There are materials on both the Florida District http://www.floridakeyclub.org/ and the Key Club International (KCI) http://www.keyclub.org websites that will help with planning and carrying out club officer training. In addition, your Key Club LTG or Assistant Administrator can assist you.

Summer Board Meetings

Successful Key Clubs have Board of Directors who meet over the summer to plan for the coming year. At a minimum they plan their membership drive, membership requirements, projects and schedule, and budget. Clubs that wait until they return to school to do this find it difficult to get started until later in the fall, don’t have projects ready to go to keep new members interested, and often have difficulty getting activities placed on the school calendar. Your club should be ready to rock and roll at its first meeting in August. It doesn’t hurt to plan a few service projects over the summer as well. Service doesn’t take a vacation.

Pride Report Deadline

There may have been some confusion about Pride Report deadlines, so here is the correct information. Pride Reports are to be completed AND SUBMITTED between the 1st and 10th of the month following the month being reported. They are past due after the 10th of the month. Club Secretaries should plan to complete and submit their reports as early as possible, not wait until the 10th to start and complete them (Pride Reports are not a test for which to cram the night before they are past due). In fact, a report can be filled out at anytime on an ongoing basis, then at the end of the month, after the last information is completed, it can be submitted. A submitted report can even be updated later. DON’T FORGET TO CLICK ON SUBMIT after inputting all information AND ready to send it on. Otherwise, the report has not been completed. Like the OIS form, the link to the Pride Reports is http://opr.floridakeyclub.com/opr/opr_login.asp.

News to Note

Change in FCAT Dates Forces Florida Key Club to Change DCON Dates

Please appreciate that I have just chewed my tongue off to avoid editorializing about our state legislature. Bottom line: Because of the Florida Legislator’s decision to move FCAT to mid April for the foreseeable future, Florida Key Club has been forced to move all DCON’s starting in 2011 through 2016 to May. Before you start writing me about how this change in dates is a bad idea, please read the information at The Effect of FCAT on District Convention so you will understand all the issues. It is not that long.

On a much happier note . . . The Florida District Makes History, Again

Key Club in Florida has played an important role in the history of Key Club since the beginning. Florida was instrumental in forming Key Club as an International organization, it was first district, held the first district convention, had the first Key Club International President, etc. Now we have added our name to the Key Club history books again. With the chartering on May 3 of a new club at Edison Collegiate High School in Punta Gorda, Florida has provided Key Club International with it 250,000th member. This is the first time that milestone has been reached. But that’s not all…on Wednesday, May 19th, dignitaries will descend upon the school to participate in the celebration. I am sure it will all be digitalized and available for future viewing, so keep a watch out.

Again, I thank all of you for what you do to make Key Clubbing the great program that it is!

The purpose of this monthly email is to alert Faculty and Kiwanis Advisors of timely information that will help you carry out your Advisor responsibilities. It also is intended to educate Kiwanis Club leaders about their club’s responsibilities to their Key Club(s).

ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN THIS MONTH . . .

District Convention – Bring Forms to Convention and Status of Background Checks

If you did not mail these completed forms by March 26th, you must bring them with you to Orlando and turn them in during registration on Thursday. Do not mail them now as them may not reach of the District officer in time. If you have gone online and completed the background check questionnaire and saw the completion screen and hopefully printed that out as it told you to do, then you have completed this requirement, regardless of whether your name shows up in the online list.

Need Webmaster Applications

We are still in need of qualified candidates for this extremely important position. The person appointed to Webmaster will acquire much experience with webhosting and will likely be directing some major upgrades to our website and online applications this coming year. It promises to be an exciting year in this area. Anyone with significant experience as described in the application should be encouraged to consider applying for this position. In addition, as a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees, this board member will gain a great deal of leadership training and experience. See information and application form at http://www.floridakeyclub.com/dcon/elections.

Get OIS Forms Completed Now

Once again I appeal to all of you to be sure that your club has completely filled out it online Officer Information sheet for 2010-2011, including both the Kiwanis and Faculty Advisors. I cannot emphasis to you how important it is that this get done right away. Do not wait for anything. The link is http://opr.floridakeyclub.com/opr/opr_login.asp. The club’s current password will still work until April 15th.

Bring all Pride Reports Up To Date

It is very important for Key Club to be able to measure how much work it does as an organization, which is why we have a monthly Pride Report system. On April 15th, the Pride Reports will be locked for the 2009-2010 year and no changes will be possible. Please be sure that all past reports from April 2009 through March 2010 are completed before April 15th.

Note that the new club secretary will have to establish a new password to complete the April 2010 Pride Report when due on May 1st. All this will be explained in the secretaries’ workshop at DCON or contact your new Lt. Governor after April 18th for questions.

Big THANK YOU! to All Advisors

April is the last month of the Key Club year. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of our Faculty and Kiwanis Advisors for all of your many hours you commit and dedicate to making Key Club the outstanding organization it is. In Florida, we have seen tremendous growth in members and clubs this year as well as an increase in club participation on the Division and District level, including a 46% increase in attendance at the upcoming District Convention. In addition, service hours performed has dramatically increased this year! We recognize that the resulting increase in service to our communities and opportunities for leadership and character development are a direct result of your time and commitment. We appreciate and celebrate you so much.

Key Club Advisors ROCK!

Many of you will be at District convention in just a few days. I look forward to meeting all of you.

ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN THIS MONTH . . .

District Convention – Mail Required Forms by March 26th

Now that you have registered for DCON, be sure Code of Conduct and a Medical Authorization forms are completed on each student and in the mail no later than March 26. After this date, do NOT mail them. Instead, take them to convention and turn them in at check in. Be prepared to spend a lot more time at check in if you do not mail them in time. Make copies of these forms before mailing or turning in. Be sure the Medical form is notarized and the Code of Conduct is signed. Adults do NOT have to complete the Medical Auth form, but they DO have to complete the Code of Conduct (but no parent signature required .

Mail forms to: Florida District of Key Club, 5545 Benchmark Lane, Sanford, FL 32773-8116.

District Convention – Send Payment Immediately

Once you “submit” your online DCON registration information, you are expected to put the invoice into the payment process at your school immediately. Also, you are expected to pay for any registrations you submit. So, do not hit submit unless you have collected the money and are ready to have a check cut (assuming you are not paying online through PayPal).

Scholarships and One Award Deadline Extended

All scholarships and the Governor’s Day Project deadlines have been extended to April 1 postmarked. More information coming in a separate email. All other awards that had a March 1 deadline are closed. There are still awards and contests that are submitted at DCON. Be sure to sign up at DCON for the oratory and the talent contests.

Convention Program Advertisement

Remember to sell at least $100 in convention advertisement to qualify your club’s seniors for college scholarships. Even if you do not attend convention (which I hope is not the case!), you can still sell ads and qualify. Of course, selling more than $100 will produce more money for scholarships. Deadline is March 20th for “camera-ready” ad copy.

Need Webmaster Applications

District Webmaster is an appointed position and applications should be submitted at DCON. Please encourage any of your members who you feel might have the expertise to work on our website. See information at http://www.floridakeyclub.com/dcon/elections.

New Club Officers and Faculty and Kiwanis Advisor Information

Now that your new club officers have been elected, please be sure the club secretary completes the new online OIS form for 2010-2011 right now, before April. This is EXTREMELY important; it is our only source of information for communication with you and the club’s officers. PLEASE follow up to be sure this is done before April. Don’t forget to have the Advisors’ information included as well. This online form is accessed at http://opr.floridakeyclub.com/opr/opr_login.asp. The club’s current password will still work through March.

Also, be sure to call on your Key Club Lt. Governor to conduct the installation of officers. That is one of their responsibilities and they look forward to doing it. Remember to invite your sponsoring Kiwanis club members.

Last Day to Complete 2009-2010 Pride Reports

On April 15th, the Pride Reports will be locked and no changes will be possible. The new club secretary will have to establish a new password to complete the April Pride Report. All this will be explained in the secretaries’ workshop at DCON.

Hope to see everyone at District Convention next month!

The purpose of this monthly email is to alert Faculty and Kiwanis Advisors of timely information that will help you carry out your Advisor responsibilities. It also is intended to educate Kiwanis Club leaders about their club’s responsibilities to their Key Club(s).

In this issue:

District Convention registration deadline
Awards and Contests your club can apply for
Convention program advertisement provides college scholarships for your senior Key Clubbers
Encourage members to run or apply for Florida District board positions
Club officers must be elected this month
New Officer Information Sheet coming March 1
Featured Kiwanis Responsibility to Key Club

ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN THIS MONTH . . .

District Convention – 72nd Annual Florida District of Key Club Convention – April 15-18, 2010

Registration deadline for the $200 quad rate is February 20th, after that, cost increases $50 for all registrations. The link for all the information you need is http://www.FloridaKeyClub.com/DCON. Please ensure that every Key Club is represented by at least one member; the cost for one is only $100 plus any transportation to Orlando. You cannot beat that price!!!

Complete and Send Awards This Month

Every club should look over the awards that can be won at DCON. The deadline for many is March 1. Go to the above link for DCON to find the awards information. Do NOT assume your club will not win awards…you might be surprised. Besides, winning is not the only reason to submit applications. Also look at the DCON events that can be entered, such as the talent and oratory competition. This year we will feature more Key Club talent during the talent night event.

Deadline is February 20th to submit ads, if you need an extension, let me know.

Candidates for District Office (Governor, Secretary, Treasurer, Webmaster, Editor)

At present, we have 4 candidates for Governor, 2 for Secretary, and 1 for Treasurer. Webmaster and Editor are appointed from applications submitted at DCON. Serving on the District board provides a quantum leap in leadership experience through Key Club. Please encourage any of your members who you feel are leaders to consider applying for any of these positions. Applications can be submitted up to the opening session of DCON (April 15th), but I would recommend doing it much earlier. Information can be found at the DCON link above.

Club Officers Must be Elected by February 28th

Your club Bylaws require that your club nominate and elect officers for 2010-2011 by Feb. 28th. There are very good reasons for this early election including time to receive training before they take office after DCON or by May 1 and ability to begin planning for next year during the summer. Please make sure this happens and that the new officers attend DCON for that extra boost of enthusiasm and leadership skills development.

Also, be sure to call on your Key Club Lt. Governor to conduct the installation of officers. That is one of their responsibilities and they look forward to doing it. Remember to invite your sponsoring Kiwanis club members.

Officer Information Sheet Cutoff Date

On March 1, the online OIS form for this year will be locked and a new form for next year will be available for completion. Be sure that your club secretary completes this form as soon after March 1 as possible with the information on the newly elected officers. Do not forget to include all requested information for both the Faculty and Kiwanis Advisors. This form is our primary source of contact information for your club, DO NOT NEGLECT IT.

Featured Kiwanis Responsibility to Your Key Club . . .

#10 Ensure Key Club members attend conventions and conference.
One of the characteristics of Key Club that makes it attractive to all concerned is its leadership development opportunities. Key Club provides this in many ways, but one way is through the various conventions and conferences it offers. Both the sponsoring Kiwanis club and the high school’s administration have a responsibility to promote and support these activities. Be sure you are encouraging Key Club members, especially its officers, to attend District Convention (April), monthly Division Council Meetings (DCM’s), Key Club Kickoff Conference (KCKC) in the Fall, Spring Rally (occurring now), and the International Convention (July). Kiwanis clubs are strongly encouraged to make it a priority to provide some funds to help pay for these events as well.
As always, we thank all the advisors for all the work you do to make Key Club the great experience for high school students that it is.

ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN THIS MONTH . . .

Spring Rallies

Spring Rally is an important annual Key Club event. These are Zone meetings held in January and February where Lt. Governors for the next year are elected, District Convention is promoted, and training for members, officers, and advisors occurs. Certainly every club should be represented, but more importantly, many members from every club should attend. Your Lt. Governor should have been communicating with you and your club officers about the details. If you have not heard anything, contact me or your Assistant Administrator. Here is the schedule:

Need Candidates for Lieutenant Governor (LTG)

As mentioned above, Spring Rally is where the Divisions’ LTG’s are elected for the next year. It is very important that each and every division has a LTG. As advisors, it is appropriate for you to encourage any Key Club members who display leadership qualities to consider running for this office to further develop their leadership skills. Please consider your Key Club members and encourage a young leader to go the next step in Key Club.

District Convention – Deadlines

This month is not too early to finalize your club’s plans for the 72nd Annual Florida District of Key Club Convention that will be held April 15-18, 2010. You should have received a mailing by now. If you have not, you can see the contents of the mailing at http://FloridaKeyClub.com/downloads/Convention-Material-11-29.pdf. Registration deadline is Feb. 20th and payment must follow the online registration within seven days of registering, if you do not pay online. There is no reason why every single club in Florida cannot have at least one Key Club member attend convention. Cost for the first registration is only $100 with the $100 club registration discount. You cannot beat that price! The link for all the information you need is http://www.FloridaKeyClub.com/DCON.

Please note these deadlines:

February 20, 2010 – Deadline for Convention registration, add $50 to cost after this date
February 20, 2010 – Deadline for submitting advertisement for program and scholarships
March 1, 2010 – Deadline to mail awards applications where required
March 26, 2010 – Deadline to mail Code of Conduct and Med Auth forms; bring to convention after this date

Convention Program Advertisement

To help reduce the cost of convention and to provide college scholarships for Key Club seniors, clubs are asked to sell at least $100 in advertisement that will be placed in the convention program book. Key Club seniors from clubs that sell at least $100 in ads will be eligible for scholarships for the 2010-2011 school year with any monies that exceed the cost of the program book. See the convention website for the more information, including examples of ads.

New Clubs Chartered to Date

The Florida District has now chartered thirteen new clubs to date. Welcome to the advisors of these newest clubs. Here are the new clubs chartered since last month’s list:

#8 St. Petersburg Catholic; 12/7/2009; Div. 13 LTG Frank Ji; Kiwanis Club of Gulf Beaches

Last month’s informational email contained a lot of details on several topics. If you did not receive that email, please write to me so I can forward it to you.

All of us in the Florida District of Key Club hope you have a great 2010! We thank you for all you do for Key Club. Let me know if I can be of service to you.

Dear Advisors,

The purpose of this monthly email is to alert Faculty and Kiwanis Advisors of timely information that will help you carry out your Advisor responsibilities. It also is intended to educate Kiwanis Club leaders about their club’s responsibilities to their Key Club(s).

ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN THIS MONTH . . .

Dues

If your club has not mailed its dues to Key Club International, you club is now delinquent. Please see the attached to verify if Key Club International has posted your club’s dues (as of 11/25). If not, please follow up with the Key Club or the school bookkeeper to be sure they have now been mailed. It can take a week or two from the time dues are mailed until they are posted on this report. For questions on this issue, please do not contact me or other district leaders as we have no control over the posting of dues. If you feel the dues were mailed November 11th or before and your club is not showing up as paid, the proper procedure is to call Key Club International to inquire about it (1-800-549-2647). If you do not know how to pay dues, feel free to contact your Key Club Lt. Governor, your Assistant Administrator, or me. Assistant Administrators contact information can be found at http://www.floridakeyclub.com/district-board/advisors-administrators.

Membership cards and other materials

If your club has produced online the dues invoice on or before November 18th, even if you have not yet mailed the check, and you have not received your new member cards, pins, etc. (mailed to the Faculty Advisor at the school address), call Key Club International (1-800-549-2647).

District Convention Information Now on Website

You may now access all the information you need about the 72nd Annual Florida District of Key Club Convention that will be held April 15-18, 2010. That link is http://www.FloridaKeyClub.com/DCON. Also, a District convention mailing will go out this week to all Faculty Advisors at the school address. You will find the content of this mailing at http://FloridaKeyClub.com/downloads/Convention-Material-11-29.pdf. Clubs are strongly encouraged to register and, if allowed, pay online. Be sure to mail in Code of Conduct and Medical Authorization forms by March 26th in order to eliminate any registration delays when you arrive at the hotel.

All adults attending convention will have to undergo background checks. Checks are good for two years. Go to this link http://floridakiwanis.com/keyclubdcon/adultlist.aspto see who does NOT need background checks this year and to get to the website to submit to a background check. There is a charge to the District for these checks, so only those who need it and will be attending should complete a background check. This link is also found in the registration information and the online registration process.

Plan to send at least one Key Club member from your Key Club(s). You cannot beat the price, which is the lowest it has been in years: $200 per quad minus $100 per club with one or more students registering! In other words, if only one student is attending, cost is $100. If two students are attending, cost is $300. Consider sending at least the incoming club president.

Please note these deadlines:

December 31, 2009 – UNICEF and Grassroots Soccer money postmarked to Key Club International.

Awards Information/Applications Now on Website

This year, there will not be an “awards packet” like we had in past years. Awards information and applications are now online. Many of the awards can be filled out online and printed and some are actually filled out and submitted online. The district awards link is http://www.FloridaKeyClub.com/DCON/ContestandAwards. Awards questions should be directed to Assistant Administrator Bev Baird (see link above under “Dues” for contact information).

Elections Procedures & Candidate Forms Also on Website

Advisors, please consider encouraging someone from your club to run for District office, especially Lt. Governor where elections take place at Spring Rallies in January and February. Generally speaking, club secretaries and presidents make good candidates, though there are exceptions to this. Anyone who is currently not a senior who you feel might make a good District leader should be encouraged to consider running for office. As advisors, you have much influence in encouraging members to at least consider this outstanding leadership opportunity.

All forms required for election and appointments to District offices and International endorsement must be completed online and printed for signatures. Key Club members wishing to run for Lt. Governor at Spring Rally, run for a District officer position (Governor, Secretary or Treasurer) at convention, apply for District Webmaster or District Editor, or run for International Board endorsement should log onto http://www.floridakeyclub.com/dcon/elections and read all the information in the Elections Procedures & Candidate Forms packet and complete all required forms. Note that many of these forms require signatures of school officials, Kiwanians, and parents, so those interested need to start the process as soon as possible. Elections and candidate questions should be directed to me.

Please encourage a Key Club member to run for Lt. Governor for your division. This is an outstanding leadership opportunity.

Pride Reports May Be Updated After They Are Submitted

In case you or your Key Club secretary was not aware, in Key Club, after a monthly Pride Report has been submitted, it can later be modified. This is handy for clubs who forget to include projects, put the project in the wrong month, or need to change the number of service hours performed.

New Clubs Chartered to Date

The Florida District has chartered seven new clubs to date and there are several more very close to being chartered. Welcome to the advisors of these clubs. Here is the list to date:

Dear Advisors,

The purpose of this monthly email is to alert Faculty and Kiwanis Advisors of timely information that will help you carry out your Advisor responsibilities. It also is intended to educate Kiwanis Club leaders about their club’s responsibilities to their Key Club(s).

ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN THIS MONTH . . .

Dues, Dues, Dues

By now, any club who has not sent their dues in to Key Club Int’l should be very close to completing the process. The deadline is November 30th to not be in delinquent status and to qualify for various awards at District convention. It is a responsibility of the Kiwanis Advisor to follow up on this task to be sure it gets done. Any questions about the process should be directed to the Key Club Lt. Governor, Key Club District Treasurer, Zone Assistant Administrator, or me.

Membership cards and other materials follow dues invoicing

Once a club has submitted their membership list and printed their invoice on the Member Update Center site on the Key Club International website, materials are sent to the club at the school address in care of the Faculty Advisor. These materials arrive fairly quickly. They include a membership card and member pin for new members only and other materials in a box. Please be sure these materials are distributed to the members, preferably during a nicely planned induction meeting.

Updating of Officer Information Sheets (OIS)

Most clubs have provided information their OIS forms online as requested. However, many clubs have incomplete and incorrect information. For example, most clubs have not filled in the information for their Kiwanis Advisors or provided email addresses for some or all of persons listed or have typed in incorrect/incomplete email addresses. Please have the Key Club secretary go online and print what is listed on your club’s OIS form and check to see that all information is there and is correct. This is where we get information for communicating with the club officers and Advisors.

New Key Club District Website

The new website is up and running and it is awesome, according to the Key Club members who have visited it: http://floridakeyclub.com. By December 1, District Convention, Awards information, and District Candidates information will be available.

Key Club Int’l 501(c)3 Questionnaire

The attached letter will be sent to clubs (if not already sent) in the next few weeks with information about Key Club’s 501(c)3 status. The faculty advisor or high school representative for all US clubs is asked fill out and return it. Please help by completing and returning it promptly.

UNICEF Funds Submission: Deadline, Where to Send, Check Made To

Club who have raised money for UNICEF through Treat or Treat for UNICEF or other means will need to put a check in the mail for these funds on or before December 31, 2009 in order to get qualify for the various District and International recognitions. Since schools are closed the last two weeks of December, this will need to be taken care of before winter break. Make checks payable to KEY CLUB INTERNATIONAL and mail to 3636 Woodview Trace, Indianapolis, IN 46268 (KCI office). Mark check “UNICEF”.

Featured Kiwanis Responsibility to Your Key Club . . .

#2 Ensure Kiwanis members attend every sponsored club meeting.
Visiting Kiwanians should be members other than the faculty advisor and Kiwanis advisor, both of whom normally attend each Key Club meeting. Every effort should be made to assign different Kiwanis members to attend each Key Club meeting.

The Kiwanis advisor is responsible for:

Instructing the presiding Key Club president on
the protocol for introducing guests attending the
Key Club meeting

Informing the Key Club president of whom Kiwanis
guest(s) will be

Notifying the Kiwanis club of any Key Club
meeting changes or cancellations

Remember that Kiwanians need to experience Key Club directly in order to more fully appreciate this important project of Kiwanis. Visiting Key Club meetings is one way of accomplishing this. In addition, Key Club members will understand that Kiwanis cares about them when they see other Kiwanians take the time to attend their meetings.

Have a great month.

On August 22nd, Hillsborough County Special Olympics held its regional qualifier for swimming, Special Olympics Aquatics. Dozens of athletes were there with their families and coaches at the YMCA in New Tampa, and there were dozens of volunteers, including about twenty guys from Jesuit Key Club.

We arrived well before any athletes to prepare the pool area and for training. While a few guys set up the sound system, the rest of us were assembling the bleachers for the parents and the awards stage. After a while people started to arrive, and we were taught how to time the different events, direct traffic, and bring the athletes to their lanes. For a while there was little to do, so we socialized with the families of the athletes. They were all very grateful that we had volunteered our time to their children, and some asked us to volunteer again at the state level.

There were up to four lanes for the swimmers, and three of us were assigned to each lane. We recorded their times and helped them out of the pool. Very few of the races were close, and some swimmers struggled to finish. Near the end of the day, the coaches, who were high school students on swim teams, joined the athletes in the pool and participated in relay races. Although this was the qualifier to go to the state, we could clearly see that it was not about who was the fastest swimmer. Instead, it was about camaraderie and having fun. Neither the athletes nor their families were concerned about their times; they were just happy to be there.

Lt. Governor: Rene Miller Div.14C

Zone 7 has recently added a new member to its extensive family. However, this new addition is no ordinary Key Clubber. The member does not attend a school, does not live in Florida, nor does she eat anything but sweet, delicious grass. The obvious question to follow such an introduction would be, “Who on God’s green earth is this member?”. Her name is Lola, and she is a llama. The entire idea for Lola started the Sunday morning of DCON at the first official Board Meeting of the 2009-2010 District Board where the idea was raised to bring a mascot to Zone 7, to represent the zone’s values, ideals, and principles upon which to conduct Key Club affairs. Numerous animals were thrown out to take the incredibly difficult job of symbolizing Zone 7, but none truly embodied the spirit of the zone like that of the llama. So, it was decided that Zone 7 would find a way to donate a llama, and adapt that animal as their representing character. The llama at first may appear grotesque, smelly, and disheveled; upon closer inspection, however, one finds an animal that completely surrounds itself in a life of service. By passing a collection hat around at three DCM’s, Lola was donated to a family in the Andes Mountains through an organization called the Heifer Project. This is not your ordinary gift. The family, upon receiving the gift, immediately became one of the richest families in the village, being able to use Lola’s fur and milk as a prized trading commodity in the local market. And when Lola has children, those beautiful baby llamas will be donated to other poor families in the surrounding area. It is easy to see why Zone 7 chose such a commonly passed over animal. Lola’s very life revolved around serving her owners: giving her fur, milk, and acting as a pack animal whenever needed. Such a life based around service through dedication and hard work summed up the true ideals of Zone 7, and she serves today as their proud representative. Through one simple donation to the Heifer Project, Zone 7 was able to make this world just a little bit better, and in the process got an amazingly awesome mascot.
